Priorities

Over the last few months the elders at Eastside has been requesting your prayers as it relates to the future direction of the church. At this time, the elders are ready to announce our 3 main emphasizes for 2010. I will share these priorities one at a time. Today is  our first priority. Later this week I will share priorities 2 and 3. All 3 of these prioritie are vital to Eastside’s future. These are in no particular order. There had to be a first, second, and third.

Priority #1: Be a blessing to each other, to our community, and to the world through our generosity/giving of our time, talent, and treasure:

How will this priority be accomplished in 2010? Here are some of our major initiatives. There may be other outreach events added as the year unfolds.

  • Shoes for Haiti – collection is going on now through the end of March
  • Madison County Back Pack Program – a year around effort to provide food for school children on the weekends. Presently serving over 200 children in Madison County.
  • God’s Outreach Food Pantry of Madison County – a local ministry which Eastside supports year around. Construction will start in 2010 for their new distribution center which will be located on East Main Street.  Eastside will provide most of the labor for this endeavor.
  • Madison County Empty Bowls Project – March 26th at First Baptist Church – provide soup for the participants and encourage others to attend either lunch from 11:00 to 1:00pm or dinner from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Donations benefits God’s Outreach, Salvation Army, Home Meals, & Food Bank of KY River Foothills.
  • Working with other churches in Madison County to launch a deaf mission church – ongoing effort
  • Easter Extravaganza on April 3, 2010 – Networking with the City of Richmond to provide safe alternatives for children of Madison County
  • Neighborhood Impact – June 26-July 2 – Week of Missions in Richmond, Berea, & Irvine. More details forthcoming.
  • Upward Basketball & Cheerleading Camp – week long camp for boys and girls ages 1st grade thru 6th grade. Dates to be determined.
  • International Mission Trip to Guatemala – July 31-August 7 – 8 day mission trip to serve at Prince of Peace Orphanage.
  • Upward Basketball & Cheerleading Regular Season – Sharing the gospel to over 400 students.
  • Feed My Starving Children Meal Packing Event – October 16-22 at The Home Store and More. This year’s goal is 200,000 meals.
  • Thanksgiving Food Basket Giveaway – to local families through the school system
  • Adopt-A-Family for Christmas – each small group associated with Eastside is encouraged to adopt a family for Christmas.

International Mission Trip to Guatemala

An 8 day mission trip is scheduled for July 31st – August 7th to Prince of Peace Home for Girls in Guatemala. This trip is available for men, women, and children 8 years of age and older.  There is a need for men and women with a background in construction to assist with a building project, and there is a need for people with a medical background to assist in the medical clinic. Simplified Missional Living

vigan I have been encouraging people at Eastside for the last several years to living missional, to live on mission with God, to be obedient to whatever it is that God is telling you to do. I found this article and I thought it summarized what I have been saying in simple terms. The article is Simplified Missional Living by Jonathan Dodson.

Eat with Non-Christians

We all eat three meals a day. Why not make a habit of sharing one of those meals with a non-Christian or with a family of non-Christians? Go to lunch with a co-worker, not by yourself. Invite the neighbors over for family dinner. If it’s too much work to cook a big dinner, just order pizza and put the focus on conversation. When you go out for a meal, invite a non-Christian friend. Or take your family to family-style restaurants where you can sit at the table with strangers and strike up conversations. Have cookouts and invite Christians and non-Christians. Flee the Christian subculture.

Walk, Don’t Drive

If you live in a walkable area, make a practice of getting out and walking around your neighborhood, apartment complex, or campus. Instead of driving to the mailbox or convenience store, walk to get mail or groceries. Be deliberate in your walk. Say hello to people you don’t know. Strike up conversations. Attract attention by walking the dog, carrying along a 6-pack to share, bringing the kids. Make friends. Get out of your house! Last night I spent an hour outside gardening with my family. We had good conversations with about four of our neighbors. Take interest in your neighbors. Ask questions. Engage. Pray as you go. Save some gas, the planet, and some people.

Be a Regular

Instead of hopping all over the city for gas, groceries, haircuts, eating out, and coffee, go to the same places at the same times. Get to know the staff. Smile. Ask questions. Be a regular. I have friends at coffee shops all over the city. My friends at Starbucks donate a ton of leftover pastries to our church 2-3 times a week. We use them for church gatherings and occasionally give them to the homeless. Build relationships. Be a regular.

Hobby with Non-Christians

Pick a hobby that you can share. Get out and do something you enjoy with others. Try city league sports or local rowing and cycling teams. Share your hobby by teaching lessons, such as sewing, piano, knitting, or tennis lessons. Be prayerful. Be intentional. Be winsome. Have fun. Be yourself.

Talk to Your Co-workers

How hard is that? Take your breaks with intentionality. Go out with your team or task force after work. Show interest in your co-workers. Pick four and pray for them. Form moms’ groups in your neighborhood and don’t make them exclusively non-Christian. Schedule play dates with the neighbors’ kids. Work on mission.

Volunteer with Non-Profits

Find a non-profit in your part of the city and take a Saturday a month to serve your city. Bring your neighbors, your friends, or your small group. Spend time with your church serving your city. Once a month. You can do it!

Participate in City Events

Instead of playing XBox, watching TV, or surfing the net, participate in city events. Go to fundraisers, festivals, cleanups, summer shows, and concerts. Participate missionally. Strike up conversation. Study the culture. Reflect on what you see and hear. Pray for the city. Love the city. Participate with the city.

Serve Your Neighbors

Help a neighbor by weeding, mowing, building a cabinet, or fixing a car. Stop by the neighborhood association or apartment office and ask if there is anything you can do to help improve things. Ask your local Police and Fire Stations if there is anything you can do to help them. Get creative. Just serve!
