What Is A Disciple?

February 27, 2012

Dear Friends,

Eastside’s vision is….Disciples Making Disciples! That’s it. Period.

If “making disciples” is our target or goal then the questions becomes what is our definition of a disciple? In other words, if we are going to be a disciple-making church we must agree on what a disciple is. Wouldn’t you agree?

A common definition of what a disciple is allows us to evaluate if we are disciples, and it helps us to understand what it means to be a disciple.

Our definition of what a disciple is, is not new to us. In fact, it has been around for a couple thousand years. The definition of a disciple comes from Matthew 4:19 (ESV) – “And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

A disciples is one who…

  • Knows and follows Christ (Follow me)
  • Being changed by Christ (I will make you)
  • Committed to the mission of Christ (Fishers of men)
Personal Reflection Questions….
1. Are you a fan of Christ or are you a disciple of Christ?
2. What’s the difference between being a fan of Christ and being His disciple?
3. What evidence can you provide to the world that you are Christ’s disciple?
Where do you see disciples making disciples lived out at Eastside?
